What a Difference a Friend Makes (Part 2)
FIVE TIPS TO MAKING FRIENDS from HOWTOENCOURAGE.COM
6. Invite the person to do something with you. It begins the relationship and helps each of you decide whether you want to become better friends. This is where it becomes very risky. "And then the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom." (or make friends or follow your passions…dreams)
7. Hear and accept the person's answer to the invitation. Sometimes it's yes and sometimes no. Respond honestly and kindly. Friends accept one another the way they are from the beginning and respect other's plans. Practice might be needed to accept a no and continue to feel good about yourself and the relationship.
8. Congratulate yourself for taking the step to start a new friendship. Starting a new friendship takes energy, risk and commitment. When people learn to say good things to themselves, this builds personal strength, self-reliance and confidence, making it easier to start new friendships in the future.
9. Realize that sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. It's not your fault when things don't work out. There might be many reasons that the person does not want to connect right now. Don't let that discourage you from trying again.
10. Be friends with yourself. In the end you come home to you. Enjoy being alone and doing things alone and you will be a calmer, more peaceful friend. Help your children learn to be friends with themselves and they will be stronger, self-reliant and confident.
P.S. Dale Carnegie wrote this almost fifty years ago. It’s as true today as it was then.
“You can make more friends in two months by becoming genuinely interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you.”
We spend precious hours fearing the inevitable…
It would be wise to use that time
adoring our families,
cherishing our friends,
and living our lives.
